EdCone.com: Junior 'n them

"When it comes to actual racing, NASCAR died when it went to television."

NASCAR didn't start to grow until they got decent TV packages.

Back in the 60s and 70s, the only time you could see a race on the tube was a three week tape delayed truncated version on ABC's Wide World of Sports, interspersed between such exciting "sports" like figure skating and competitive nose-picking events.

It was a regional sport, and it thrived on NASCAR's MRN coverage through the South, but got only passing notice for years in the rest of the nation. When the TV packages came through, the rawness of the sport the sport found enthusiasts among the sprint car, midget, and Champ car set of the northeast, midwest, and California racing fans, who were used to seeing the (literally)rough and tumble world of Saturday night open wheel racing at their respective local tracks.

Don't believe me? Ask Chris Economaki, who has seen it all.
