Susan G. Komen backs down (Politico)

Susan G. Komen for the Cure on Friday announced it will revise its grant requirements to restore funding to Planned Parenthood ? a lightning-fast reversal of a decision that threatened to destroy the breast cancer charity?s reputation.

?We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair,? the group?s founder, Nancy G. Brinker, said in a blog post. ?We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.?

The news comes just three days after Komen said it would revise its grant requirements, resulting in a cut in grants to Planned Parenthood, which is under investigation by Republicans on Capitol Hill. Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) is investigating whether the group used public funds to cover abortions.

The group said Friday that only organizations found guilty in a criminal investigation would be ineligible, instead of simply being the subject of an investigation.

The charity ? once considered staunchly nonpartisan and almost universally supported ? this week found itself in the middle of one of the most controversial issues in American politics. Brinker said all along that the move was not based on politics or abortion. But on Friday, she apologized and asked the public to move forward.

?We urge everyone who has participated in this conversation across the country over the last few days to help us move past this issue,? Brinker said in the statement. ?We do not want our mission marred or affected by politics ? anyone?s politics.?

Planned Parenthood said it was grateful for the change in policy.

?In recent weeks, the treasured relationship between the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and Planned Parenthood has been challenged, and we are now heartened that we can continue to work in partnership toward our shared commitment to breast health for the most underserved women," said Cecile Richards, of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. "We are enormously grateful that the Komen Foundation has clarified its grantmaking criteria, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Komen partners, leaders and volunteers."

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), who had organized a group of Democratic senators to protest the grant cutoff, cheered the reversal as well.
