Police: Facebook Sneaker Deal Turns Into Armed Robbery

WEST HARTFORD?

Two people who arranged via Facebook Marketplace to buy sneakers outside a Westfarms mall restaurant Saturday were instead robbed, police said.

Police were called at about 4:15 p.m. to a reported robbery outside the Ruby Tuesday restaurant at Westfarmsl. The victims told police their assailants pulled knives and stole an iPhone and $320 in cash. The pair then fled.

The alleged robbers ran off toward the nearby D'Angelo's restaurant, where they were caught by two Farmington officers.

Witnesses and the victims then positively identified the pair as the robbers. Each was charged with first-degree robbery, fifth-degree larceny and risk of injury to minors. Because they are juveniles, police did not release their names. They were taken to the juvenile detention center on Broad Street in Hartford and will be presented in juvenile court.

Police later determined the victims met the alleged robbers to buy sneakers. The victim's phone was recovered and a Bloomfield police dog was able to find one of the knives, police said.
