How Niche Content Sites Can Build And Keep Audiences

audiencen Sept. 2007, I was on a well-deserved holiday, having spent an excruciating 11 months with a startup where 80-hour weeks were normal. I was the Chief Technology Officer and in my short tenure, I had gained new clients, setup the company infrastructure and trained a few interns. On the morning I came back from holiday, my office was packed up, and the bosses were in it to hand my stuff to me. They kicked me out of the door without so much as a thank you. I went through the various stages of depression, and then realized that I had to come up with an action plan quickly to pay for the massive mortgage and the new baby. With nothing more than an idea in mind, my wife and I started CraftGossip.com, a niche blog network covering everything that your grandma would be proud of, sewing, knitting, crochet. We also covered some new age favorites like indie crafts, edible crafts and home and garden. We decided to cover news related to the craft world (I explain later why we decided to start this site and not something else).

Google, an underdog in Asia, lays plans for Taiwan data center

Taiwan gets Internet traffic easily from the United States. I sits at the ends of undersea cables that extend directly from North America before branching off to other parts of Asia.

Google dominates Internet search engines by such a wide margin in the United States that it?s a verb as well as the corporate name of its Silicon Valley-based creator.

But in China, Google vies with the local, government-approved search engine Baidu ? which means 100 degrees ? and lags South Korea?s local brand Naver. It competes head on against fellow American company Yahoo for searches in Taiwan, splitting traffic roughly 50-50. Yahoo has also held a historic grip on Japan.

So this week, the 14-year-old Google announced that by the end of next year, it would open a data center in Taiwan to improve search speeds and reliability around the region.

Google has already started building data centers in Hong Kong and Singapore. But the larger one in Taiwan comes with government incentives and will boast a specific geographic advantage. That is, Taiwan gets Net traffic easily from the United States, home to Google and the source of numerous Internet search results, as it sits at the ends of undersea cables that extend directly here from North America before branching off to other parts of Asia.

Google will spend a combined $700 million on the three centers, which generally house computers and storage systems that help speed connections and keep them secure.

?More new Internet users are coming online everyday here in Asia than anywhere else in the world,? Google?s Asia Pacific President Daniel Alegre said at a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday at the coastal facility in Taiwan. ?That is why we are building data centers in Asia ??to ensure that our users here have the fastest, most reliable access possible to all of our services, so they can continue putting them to work.?

Google?s Taiwan data center will speed up searches particularly in China, which is just 160 kilometers (100 miles) away but has sought to censor Web searches. Baidu now controls about 75 percent of the searches in China.

?That?s a key, to serve China,? says Marvin Ma, software and services analyst with the market research firm IDC in Taipei. ?China will notice a clear improvement. And this way Google can avoid the censorship problem.?

In 2010, Google shut down its locally based Chinese search engine after a dispute with the communist government over censorship and cyber-attacks, a row that prompted harsh words from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Google won?t give market shares for Asia or estimate the overall number of users in the region. In South Korea, Naver still handles about two-thirds of the Internet searches, analysts estimate. But two years ago, Google and Yahoo signed a search-engine technology deal that has muffled the rivalry in Japan.

Google is also catching up in Taiwan as the ever popular Yahoo retrenches, with reports of layoffs in the pipeline, says Jamie Lin, founding partner with Taipei-based tech investor appWorks Ventures. ?If they don?t make any mistakes, Google is going to be the dominant player in a couple of years,? he says.

home improvement | foundation problems

by Rachel Laurendeau on April 20, 2012

Whether you are in the market to buy a home and checking to see if the house is structurally sound or whether you are a longtime homeowner, the state of a house?s foundation is extremely important and repairs should be seen as a priority. Foundation problems can start out small yet become sizeable over time. Recognizing the early warning signs and addressing them before they are full blown problems can save you many headaches and tens of thousands of dollars in repairs.

Here are a few things to look for when checking for foundation troubles.

Inside the house. Your house may be trying to tip you off to problems of foundation movement; keep your eyes and ears open.

  • Floor is not level.
  • Cracks appear in walls and ceilings, particularly over doors and windows and where the walls and ceilings meet.
  • Doors start to jam or won?t latch.
  • Windows start to stick when opening or closing.
  • The basement or crawlspace has moisture or puddles, likely indicating poor drainage around the house. Basement waterproofing may be required in this case along with ensuring proper slope of soil away from the house and cleaning out gutters.
  • In the basement or crawl space there are typically concrete supports and posts, also known as teleposts. The posts should be straight underneath the beams and firmly rested on concrete piers.

Outisde the house. A walk about and keen eye are key outside.

  • Look down the length of the foundation wall from corner to corner; it should be a straight line with no bulges or divots. These are signs that your foundation has shifted.
  • Place a level against the wall to check for leaning. There should be no signs of leaning, shifting, bowing or of the foundation jutting out.
  • Cracks ? hairline cracks in concrete are quite common and not likely a problem; however, keep an eye on them to make sure they are not expanding. Anything larger than a hairline should be looked at by a professional to assess the situation.
  • Horizontal or vertical cracks that are wider than ? inch or stairstep cracks in masonry joints are more cause for concern and should definitely be assessed.

If you suspect foundation problems in your home, talk to a professional before it worsens. This is definitely one of those projects that should NOT be put off.

For more information on foundation problems or basement waterproofing, talk to your local home improvement expert or foundation repair contractor.

The Mothers: Laura, Oskar and Elliot

Name: Laura

Children:

Oskar, 5 1/2 yrs and Elliot, 2 yrs

Location:

Manchester

Expectations of Motherhood:?Oskar was unexpected and came relatively early in mine and David's relationship, so the prospect of becoming a mother was overwhelming and frightening at first. Two members of David's family were also expecting around the same time so it was pretty intense family wise but they were wonderfully supportive. I am the oldest of my sisters and the first to have kids so this was a new experience for my family. David's family is huge, so being surrounded by babies

in the beginning of my pregnancy?just made it all the more nerve wracking for me, but actually it was just what i needed.

Elliot came along with lots of planning, organising and the chaos of a loft conversion. I loved being pregnant with both Oskar and Elliot but it was especially wonderful to?

share the experience with my little 3 year old, if not twice as exhausting. The second time around you are just so much more prepared in every way.

Reality of Motherhood:?Bloody hard work but the most rewarding thing you can do. It puts enormous pressure on you and your partner but that experience of parenthood can make your relationship stronger than ever. I think it took me a long time with Oskar to accept all that comes with being a mother, allowing myself to just enjoy it. I regret that. If you're happy and content they are more likely to be, I think I wanted it all and for it all to be perfect and by the book. I've slowed down a lot with Elliot and I am much happier for it. I don't go to every babygroup going and my day revolves around what suits Elliot and Oskar. I'm much better at judging Elliot's needs instead of trying to fit Elliot into a routine prescribed by someone else and just get on with the housework instead of resenting how mundane it is. After a long journey I am enjoying being a mother on a different level and the boys are all the happier for it.

Taking your children home for the first time:?I had home deliveries for both Oskar and Elliot. I was very fortunate to have two healthy pregnancies and uncomplicated labours. I guess I put a lot of pressure on myself to have a home delivery with Oskar and when the midwife basically scoffed at the idea it made me more determined. I was lucky enough to be able to have that choice and I guess I put my foot down a bit. I felt comfortable and relaxed in my own home and had this compulsion to strip off for both labours, it felt pretty primal and very natural. The best thing I did (and would advise anyone) was to be active during the labour. The only way I think I coped with the pain without drugs was to walk through the contractions, pacing the room and hallway and rocking backwards and forwards on an exercise ball. I am such a woos when it comes to pain normally, almost fainting when I have blood taken, but envisaging the contractions as waves of pain really really helped me. There was a build up, a high point but always an awareness of an end. Being at home was wonderful but very very real when the midwife left us with this very delicate precious little person at 4am not to return until the next day.

I nearly didn't have Elliot at home as he was 10 days overdue and they wanted to induce labour. They gave me a sweep but I'm convinced that it was an unnecessary discomfort as it just induced a false alarm. Elliot was going to come when he was good and ready. The next day David made me an incredibly hot curry and we went to the allotment and did some digging. Halfway around Highfield park my contractions had started and came almost immediately, thick and fast. Elliot came very quickly and I didn't have time for the gas and air to arrive. Elliot was born with the cord around his neck which was really frightening at that moment but the midwife was brilliant and he was absolutely fine. The one to one undisturbed attention you get from the midwives at home is intimate and reassuring. I felt safe, in control and supported by these amazing women.

The best/worst advice:?A lot of people want to give you advice especially when you are a first time mum. I think I always looked stressed and anxious with Oskar, people just want to alleviate that for you. Trusting your own instincts is always good advice, however it can feel a little vague and unhelpful the first time around because you're so tired. Sometimes you just want someone to tell you what to do! Becoming a confident mother just comes naturally to some and others, like myself, its a very steep learning curve. I read too many books preparing for Oskars arrival and totally overloaded myself with contradictory information. I think i left myself feeling more confused and stressed out.

The hardest parts of being a mother:?In the beginning its the sleep deprivation and the havoc it causes to everyday functioning. If you don't slow down and rest, and expect life to be back to 'normal' straight away it can be pretty stressful.

The best parts of being a mother:?Being so incredibly close to your child is such a unique feeling. Watching them grow in size and confidence is really rewarding and those hugs, they are the best thing ever. Also motherhood can really change you as a person. After lots of ups and many many downs I finally feel like a much more confident person, more forgiving, loving and content and that isn't a bad thing to get from having kids.

Hopes for your family:?To continue to grow in confidence as a family and for the children to have childhoods they look back and cherish. For Oskar and Elliot to grow up to be proper 'Gentleman' as my granddad has been telling Oskar in his 85 year old stern German manner! (whilst shaking his little 5 year old hand)

What advice would you offer to new and expectant mums:?Having a routine was the best thing i did with the boys. I took it too literally with Oskar to begin with and found it very stressful and was constantly time keeping. With Elliot I gently guided him into a routine, it's easier with the second because they kind of naturally slot into their siblings day especially with school in the equation. A bed time routine is actually a really lovely thing, especially in our house where having two boys makes it a noisy crazy place.

Being calm and patient at every stage of your childs development is very challenging, but the most beneficial thing you can do. Discipline with a very spirited Oskar became a shouting match and a battle of wills. Its easier said than done but being calm and consistent and seeing things through has given us a much happier home.

I just have to add that the best thing I ever got the boys was a puddle suit. They have just spent the last week getting muddy from head to toe, properly running and jumping in thick muddy water like crazy, and me, as cool as a cucumber!

TV and Movies app for Google TV gets a major refresh

TV and Movies

The TV and Movies app for your Google TV has a major update in process, making the app more personalized to your choices for content, better favorites management, and a star ratings system to help sort it all.

TV and Movies isn't a player -- it's Google's ultimate entertainment search application, sorting content from your cable or satellite provider, apps like Netflix and HBO Go, and even Amazon and providing you with information about programming. With today's additions, things got a little more personal and shows and channels you like will be easier to find. And the star ratings system helps you discover new content based on your previous ratings. Popular services like Netflix already do something similar, but with Google's special sauce on search, we imagine that this will be a great way to discover new content and programs that you really want to see. Last but not least, the Trending this Week shelf gives a list of what's trending on all of Google search from the web, so you have an idea of what other folks are watching and talking about. While we're waiting for the next generation of Google TV hardware, it's great to see the team working some magic on the software side.

New material brings semiconducting to the graphene party

New material brings semiconducting to the graphene party

Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have cooked up a new graphene-based material that could provide a speed boost for all electronics. We've seen the carbon allotrope turn up in circuitry and transistors before, but the new chemical modification -- graphene monoxide -- is said to be easier to scale up, and most importantly is semiconducting, unlike the insulating or conducting forms that have preceded it. This also means graphene can now provide the triad of electrical conductivity characteristics. The scientists were honest enough to admit the discovery was as much by chance as design, with it coming to light while investigating another material containing carbon nanotubes and tin oxide. We're sure they're not the first to make a discovery this way, we just haven't had time to check the notes to be sure of it.

Here is How Affiliate Marketers Do So Well Online

There are a lot of companies right now who are trying desperately to find the right kind of affiliate program for them to get started in and they want to get involved in one that is actually going to help them meet their long term commitments in terms of the kind of revenue they want to be making. Any company wants to make sure that they are following the kind of guidelines that are fitting the right criteria so that they are going to be able to market their products effectively to the kind of consumer base they are targeting.

After the company and their team of affiliate marketers have gone and done their job of getting all the appropriate information they need about the products, the next course of action is to do all the research necessary. What they do here is they make sure to look at the landing page and also the sales page, and there are only five guidelines you have to follow to make sure that you are doing this correctly.

There aren't a lot of details that get covered by different affiliate marketers, but the fact is that if you don't follow these guidelines you might not get the commission you need for each sale.

The first thing that you should always want to see whenever you are visiting a landing page is making sure that there is a good and free phone or 0800 number that you can get into. There are a lot of companies who will spend a great deal of time and money making sure that their landing page is perfect.

There is a lot of effor that should always going into the landing page, and making sure that there is a 800 number available for customers is going to make it far easier for the customer to the sales page but you don't really want to see this on a landing page as an affiliate because if they call the number to make a purchase then you won't get the sale.

So steer clear of landing pages that have numbers on them. Something else that you want to look for on a landing page for a product you are promoting is a special offer box, and this is something that can definitely mess with your affiliate sales with this product.

The reason some merchants include a special offer box on their site is due to the fact that they use this as a method to avoid paying affiliates or to pay them less than they expect to earn from a sale. You as an affiliate also should be concerned with making sure that you yourself can actually test the shopping cart to make sure it is working properly, and is set up for a sale to happen.

Fans recall American artist Jackson Pollock at 100

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) ? Out behind a small farmhouse on a Long Island country road sits an old gray barn where a tormented artist dripped paint off brushes, sticks ? even turkey basters ? onto canvasses spread out on a wooden floor. Besides making quite a mess of things, leaving splash marks everywhere, Jackson Pollock also created some of the 20th century's greatest masterpieces.

Pollock, who would have turned 100 this year, is being remembered at a New York City fundraiser later this month honoring a charity that aids struggling artists, along with the Academy Award-nominated actor and filmmaker Ed Harris who spent nearly a decade making the 2000 film "Pollock."

There also are exhibitions in Washington, D.C., and at the home Pollock shared with his wife, artist Lee Krasner, in the Springs community of East Hampton ? now a museum and study center. And shoe manufacturer Crocs is releasing a Pollock-inspired shoe this June, fashioned after the paint-splashed floor that visitors can still see in the artist's barn.

"I think Pollock's art is incredible," Harris told The Associated Press in a recent telephone interview. "I think it was revolutionary at the time and I think it kind of holds up that way and it is really exquisite."

The fundraiser honoring Harris, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, which has given $56.3 million in grants to artists in 72 countries since 1985, is intended to help finance and expand the work of a separate Stony Brook University-based organization that runs the Pollock-Krasner home.

"What we try to give people here is insights into who these people were, what it was that stimulated them creatively and where that took them in terms of their art," said Helen Harrison, director of the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center.

Harris said that before he started filming in 1999 ? the exteriors of the Pollock-Krasner home and scenes from a nearby general store were filmed on location in Springs; the interiors re-created on a Brooklyn sound stage ? he spent a couple of nights sleeping in Pollock's bedroom.

"I was hoping for a visitation which didn't quite happen," joked Harris, who was nominated for a best actor Oscar for his performance in the film, which also was his directorial debut.

"I can't even express how invaluable it was to me," he said of the home. "I don't think the film would have really have had the richness and authenticity it did if we weren't filming there. Just on an emotional level, or a metaphysical level of some kind, you know you're filming a story about this man and this is where he lived."

Pollock, a lifelong alcoholic who died behind the wheel in a drunken-driving crash at the age of 44, was a controversial artist reviled by some critics and lionized by others. His best-known paintings were created by dripping paint, seemingly haphazardly, across canvasses large and small. Some feature popping bright colors, others are stark black-and-whites.

"I like to describe his work as 'energy made visible,'" said Pepe Karmel, a Pollock expert and assistant professor in the art history department at New York University. "The lines curving through space, changing direction, the colors; it is an amazing image of the world that could represent many things. It's totally opened ended. What they all have in common is the fantastic energy that characterizes modern society."

Pollock was already an artist of some note working in Manhattan's Greenwich Village in the early 1940s, but the move to Long Island in late 1945 was the key to unlocking his genius, many experts say. They also agree Krasner's motive in separating Pollock from his drinking buddies in Manhattan succeeded in focusing his attention on his artwork, albeit temporarily. Marcia Gay Harden won a best supporting actress Oscar for her portrayal of Krasner, who was an artist in her own right, living in the home until her death in 1984 at age 75.

"He looks out and he sees Mother Nature, which is his great stimulation," Harrison said. "And then he thinks back to his childhood in Arizona and California and the wide open spaces. These things all came flooding back to him, and he has an epiphany."

Adds Karmel: "In a very general way, the landscape did inspire him. The immensity of the ocean, being on the beach; that is certainly feeling akin to being out west."

Today, Pollock artworks sell for tens of millions ? one painting in 2006 reportedly sold to an unidentified collector for $140 million ? but when the couple lived in East Hampton in the late '40s and '50s, they struggled to pay their bills. Harrison says there was one bounced check found amid Pollock's papers for $4, and it was several years before the home was equipped with electricity and plumbing.

A key turning point came in 1949, when Life magazine did a profile of Pollock, asking the question, "Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?"

The publicity "put him on the map in a huge way," Harrison said, noting he sold $4,000 in paintings soon after the article appeared. "He called a plumber, shingled the house, paid off the mortgage. They were normal people except for the fact they were artistic geniuses. Other than that they lived a normal life."

Pollock, who descended into a deep alcoholic haze and may have suffered from depression or other mental illness ? he was never properly diagnosed, says Harrison ? was having an affair with artist Ruth Klingman at the time of his death in August 1956. While Krasner was vacationing in Europe, Pollock smashed his Oldsmobile convertible in a drunken stupor about a mile from his home in Springs. Klingman survived the crash (she died in 2010), but a friend, Edith Metzger, was killed.

"I don't mind the fact that he was a mean son of a bitch at times, and had a lot of personal problems that he fought through," Harris said. "The one thing that I feel harms his legacy is that he basically was responsible for the death of Edith Metzger."

Besides the April 25 fundraiser in Manhattan, a centennial tribute of Pollock's art continues at the Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery in Washington, D.C. until May 15. An exhibit, "The Persistence of Pollock," will be on display at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center from May 3-July 28, and a lecture on Pollock and Krasner will be held at the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall in East Hampton on July 22.

Crocs will introduce a limited edition "Jackson Pollock Crocs Classic" shoe, featuring a replica of a photo taken from the floor of Pollock's studio in mid-June. The Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center will receive a royalty on each pair, which list for $50, said Harrison.

She recalls working as a reporter for The New York Times in the late 1980s, and being sent to Springs when the paint-stained wooden floor was found under Masonite floorboards that Pollock installed in 1952.

"All of a sudden the conservators start to make little noises, ooh ah, oh," Harrison said. "So we get down on our hands and knees and we start looking, and the colors keep coming and pretty soon we were all doing it. The joke was Jackson must have put it down when he was drunk, because the sticky side was up." Actually a handyman did the work, she later discovered.

"You think, it's just a paint-covered floor. It's just kind of a mess, really, but it's a fascinating mess because it's got all of the colors, all of the gestures and all of the energy that's in his poured paintings and there it is right there on the floor."

It's impossible to put a price on its value, she said. "It's a document; it's not a work of art because it's an accumulation over time. This covers a seven-year period of his work, the most productive and innovative period."
